Before You Pop the Question

Will she say yes?

The proposal dangles in the air like an August peach bursting with juicy promise. When you pitch a column, increase the odds that you’ll hear the right answer from your editor by incorporating the following strategies:

1.  Establish a strong, professional relationship with your editor first.  Make the proposal only after you’ve been writing for the publication for an extended time and demonstrated your ability to submit well-edited articles in a timely manner.

2.  Brainstorm several attention-grabbing column names and present them as part of your proposal.

3.  Develop a strong unifying theme and write several sample entries supporting this theme to include with your pitch.

4.  Sell your idea by knowing what sells. Include clear, strong take-away value for the target audience. Show the editor that you know the needs of the publication’s readers.

Publishing a regular column can bring unique satisfaction to a writer. If you’ve toyed with the idea in the past, perhaps you can take steps today toward making your own column a reality.

Do you have additional suggestions?   Do you write a column now?   Please share your thoughts in the comments section.
